I knew this trip was going to be good.
But I didn’t realise quite how much it would stay with me.
⸻
Meeting Ado
From the moment we met Ado, it was obvious this wasn’t just a job to him.
Fishing is his life.
As a boy, he tied flies and repaired broken rods — anything to stay connected to the river. Over time, locals began asking him to take them to the best spots. Not because he advertised, but because he knew.
That same passion has grown into a guiding business and shop, built the right way — through experience, reputation, and love for the water.
Alongside him was Hassan — calm, friendly, and always ready to help. The kind of person you instantly feel comfortable around.
⸻

The Country
Bosnia is hard to describe without sounding cliché.
Mountains, rivers, forests — all of it feels untouched. Raw. Real.
There’s a quietness to it.
A sense of space.
And beneath that, a country still rebuilding. You notice it in places — the remnants of the past — but what stands out far more is the people.
Kind. Humble. Welcoming.
Life feels simpler here. Grounded.
⸻
The Rivers
The Sana is something special.
Clear water, steady flow (strong and fast where the terrain creates elevation), and structure everywhere. The kind of river where you just know fish will be holding.
And they were.
⸻
Learning, Fast
One of the biggest takeaways for me wasn’t just the fishing — it was the improvement.
Ado worked with me on my casting and overall technique in a way that just clicked. Small adjustments, but massive difference.
More control. Better drifts. More confidence.
It’s rare to feel yourself improving that quickly — but here, it happened under his watchful and expert eye.

⸻
The Fishing
Then came the fish.
Wild brown trout.
Perfectly conditioned rainbows.
Grayling.
Not stocked, tired fish — but strong, wild, powerful fish that fought properly, and tested gear, skill and nerve.
And then… the big ones.
The kind of fish that stop you in your tracks. The kind you don’t forget.
Some landed.
Some didn’t.
On the afternoon of the second day, my first taste of Bosnian giants. As if catching over 50 trout in the day wasn’t incredible enough, we moved to another stretch and I ran my streamer through an obvious lie – my line went tight and didn’t move. I heavy thump indicated that I was attached to something big. The next 10 minutes of chaos resulted in the trout of a lifetime in the net.

Little did I know that the next morning – on the third drift through a shallow run – i would land an even bigger fish. An enormous, old, wild rainbow trout complete with battle scars. My mind was truly blown and my hands were shaking!

⸻
A New Approach
This trip was also my first real dive into euro nymphing.
It’s different, but it was a chance to test my new sage sense 10’ foot 4 weight purpose made for the job.
More connection. More feel. Less guesswork.
And when it works… it really works.
⸻
The Moments Between
But as always, it wasn’t just about the fishing.
Cooking sausages over an open fire at lunch.
Standing by the river in complete silence.
Flying the drone and seeing the landscape from above.
Enjoying the travel to and from river to guesthouse.
Meeting locals and trying new cuisine.
Those moments matter just as much.

⸻
Sharing It
One of the best parts of the trip was sharing it with my good friend Tom.
We’ve known each other a long time, but trips like this are different.
Watching him go from self proclaimed beginner to confidently and competently landing fish was brilliant — especially when the pressure was on.
One moment stands out — having lost a monster only minutes before, he played another big rainbow, with all of us watching every move as he played it. You could feel the tension… and then the release when it hit the net.
Those are the moments you remember.

⸻
Beyond the River
We also visited the waterfalls in Sana National Park.
An incredible place. Powerful, yet calm, and a reminder that this trip was about more than just fishing.
Spending time in Ado’s shop and admiring his self developed fly patterns, and most impressively his hand built custom rods.
A must for the true enthusiast with a desire for unique pieces.

⸻
More Than a Trip
By the end of it, it felt like more than just a guided trip.
It felt like the start of something.
A genuine connection. A friendship.

⸻
I’ll Be Back
The potential for further exploration, the lure of those enormous fish, and a country with so much to offer the adventurous fly fisherman…..
I know one thing for certain —
I’ll be coming back.
